Have you ever used a computer for a while and noticed that it gradually gets slower? If you use computers on a regular basis then it’s hard to ignore this, especially if you use them every day and do intensive tasks. However, you don’t need to accept this as a fact. There are plenty of great ways to keep your laptop running fast, and here’s how to do it.

Remove apps and programs that you don’t use
One of the easiest ways to make space and speed up your computer is to uninstall apps and programs that you don’t use anymore. This helps because a lot of apps and programs start up when your computer does, taking up resources that could otherwise be used on something else. Thankfully, there are plenty of easy ways to identify what kind of programs you have on your computer and which ones are good candidates for being removed. There are removal tools built for this purpose, but you can also find settings in both macOS and Windows that show you how much space certain programs and apps are taking.
Stop using too many browser tabs
These days, many people use lots and lots of browser tabs when they’re on the internet. It’s easy to open up links in a new tab so you can keep track of what you’re searching or looking for. This is especially useful if you’re shopping and you want to open up multiple tabs of different products so you can compare them. However, a lot of us that do this end up forgetting about the tabs we open. This means we end up with dozens of tabs taking up resources that could be used elsewhere. This is especially problematic if you don’t have enough RAM in your system and it’s a common issue for older computers. So if you’re not using all of those tabs that you have open, close them so your computer can run a bit faster.
Close some programs that aren’t being used
An important habit to get used to when using your computer is to close programs that you don’t use. Much like having too many browser tabs open, having too many programs means that resources are committed to them, even if they’re not actively doing something. This can make active programs slow and could even cause crashes or slow loading.
Switch to a solid state hard drive
One of the best ways to speed up a slow or older computer is to install a solid state hard drive. These load much faster than regular hard drives and have become the norm over the past few years. However, there are still many older and less expensive computers and laptops that still use mechanical hard drives. Not only are these drives slower, but they are also more prone to failure and are sensitive to vibrations and sudden movements. If possible, try to get an SSD and install a fresh copy of your operating system on it so that you can speed up your computer.
