Choosing to work from home can be a big step to take. The world of freelance is notoriously unpredictable and a regular stable income isn’t something you will have the luxury of anymore.
That being said, the freedom that comes with being your own boss and working to your own rules is a really attractive prospect. Chances are, you have been juggling this with your regular employment and have decided to take the plunge and go all-in working for yourself.
But before you take the next step, make sure you have considered all of these options to give yourself the best start possible.
Where are you working from?
As alluring as the sofa and your tv are, if you are the kind of person who gets distracted easily, this isn’t the place for you to be conducting business from. So where exactly do you plan to work from? Are you going to stay at home or head to a local coffee shop or similar?
If you are working from home, it may be worth your while to see if you can carve yourself a little office area or even a room if you have space. A space you can head to will help you get in the right frame of mind for work.
Go extravagant with a Mid Century Desk and an uber-comfortable office chair. Make sure you have enough room to be able to work from and store all your essentials. This will also help you switch off when you need to as you can ‘leave your work’ at the desk and try to separate home and work life.
How do you plan to generate your income and manage your time?
With no boss or regular working day to motivate you, how are you going to do it yourself? You need discipline and a good work ethic to make sure you stay on top of everything all the time. Whether you choose to split your day around looking after kids or work during an evening, making sure you stick to this and are productive is essential.
After all, it’s vital to be professional and deliver on deadlines. Do you have a plan in place for generating work? You need to think long term and be confident this is going to be sustainable for you in the long run.
Be realistic!
It can be tempting to take on more than you can manage. Don’t! Know your limits and create boundaries. People who work from home can often find the lines between work time and home life can become blurred. Especially if you spend all your time at home and don’t have much opportunity to conduct your business elsewhere.
Don’t be tempted to work longer hours just because you can. After all, if you stretch yourself too thin you run the risk of burnout, missing deadlines and delivering sub-par work. This isn’t beneficial to anyone and can seriously harm your physical and mental health as well as your relationships with clients.
