When twelfth night approaches, it’s time to start thinking about taking down the Christmas decorations – or is it?
But if you think your house looks bare without them and you are missing a bit of shimmer and sparkle, don’t worry; like the proverbial puppy, some decorations are not just for Christmas! So here’s a round up of those finishing touches you can leave on display and get away with:
Stars
I have a big love for all things star-shaped and it is totally ok to display them all year round. There’s nothing to stop you displaying these lovely Ngoni Wire Hanging Stars from Nkuku throughout the year.
A carnival-style star lamp or large rustic metal barn star are worthy of year round appreciation, giving your home a fun and eclectic vibe. This is the Broadway star table lamp from Made.com:
Tealight Houses & Candles
Another perennial favourite of mine, I adore those little zinc, brass or ceramic tealight houses – they just look so darn cute and homely and not at all out of place when displayed outside of Christmas. They just show that you love your home and are all about getting hygge! Dutch Townhouse Lanterns from Graham & Green:
As we know, candles definitely aren’t just for Christmas, we all love to use them throughout the year – simply swap your festive smelling cinnamon and spice ones for fresher, lighter scents. You can also add some sparkle with pretty metallic candles such as these TruGlow candles available from Lights4Fun:
Antlers and Angel Wings
You may have displayed faux antlers on your table or fireplace for Christmas, or a pair of angel wings wall decor, but don’t pack them away as these decorative items give a very eclectic look and can work in a rustic interior throughout the year, adding interest and individuality to a space.
Next has this antler decor which would be a great table centrepiece for a rustic home feature:
Branch with hanging decorations
A natural branch is a great replacement once the Christmas tree has been taken down. Suspend it from the ceiling above a dining table or attach to a wall above a sofa, then decorate with less overtly-Christmassy decorations – there’s a nice offering at Nkuku such as these Tiny Kiko frames which make a great replacement for Christmas baubles and can decorate any corner of the home.
Add a textile wall hanging and a sheepskin rug and you’ll convey a totally cosy and bohemian feel.
Sequined cushions and baskets
Sequins have been a festive staple, in both our wardrobes and homes, for many years. But instead of being consigned to Christmas only, why shouldn’t we embrace them all year round. Look for dazzling sequin accents on natural woven baskets – mine certainly won’t be going into storage until next Christmas; it will be out on display all year. Trouva have similar online.
Fairy, String and Festoon Lights
There are so many types of fairy/string/festoon lights on the market now that we don’t only associate them only with Christmas and it is totally ok to drape them over shelves or headboards, wrap around a fireside basket of logs or entwine around a tall cactus plant! When used outside on patios and balconies, or circled around tree branches, they look really attractive and add a special charm.
I absolutely love this hanging starburst light from Sparkle Lighting which is available in copper, silver or black.
Honeycomb Paper Balls
Honeycomb paper balls are a popular trend at Christmas, adorning people’s stair banisters and hanging from ceilings and above dining tables. If you pick less Christmassy colours and look for grey, navy, blush pink etc or pops of bright colour such as yellow they add such an element of fun – great in a kid’s room, too and cheap to decorate with. I really like the stone grey and mustard/ochre ones from Rockett St George.
Hopefully these ideas will give you the hit of bling and decorative accents you would otherwise miss from your Christmas decorations!
