It’s not an easy decision, choosing your new sofa. With a myriad of different designs and constantly changing trends, it’s easy to fall into the trap of choosing the very latest look for your living room – but something we love one day, can be something we loathe the next.
That’s why you should consider a leather sofa, as it never really goes out of date.
Recently we’ve been taking a look at the opulent Bay Leather Republic collection of sofas from Harveys Furniture. Exuding class and style, we’ve picked out a few of our favourites to share with you, along with our round-up of five reasons a quality leather sofa can make your life easier:
A Leather Sofa Can Be Good Value For Money
These days leather sofas are more affordable, but it’s best to avoid deals that seem too good to be true as the leather may be an inferior quality, or the internal structure of the sofa not up to scratch. It pays to spend a little more for a great leather sofa – it’s an investment piece after all, which should serve you well for many years.
With Harveys one option is to buy now and pay later. Or to keep costs down, you may prefer to mix and match your seating and buy a single statement leather armchair. The choice is yours!
As we know, a lot of sofas are sold online, but there’s nothing like seeing, feeling and sitting on a sofa to test its suitability. A visit to a Harveys’ showroom will offer you this greater insight and the chance to ask any questions. (You can find your nearest showroom on the website.)
A Leather Sofa Gives You Comfort
Who wouldn’t want to sink into a luxurious leather sofa at the end of the day? The body support and high comfort levels can leave you feeling rested and rejuvenated. And choosing a modern classic like the Sipsmith you’ll get that comfort in spades, as well as give your room a touch of elegance.
This lovely sofa with scroll arms and the option of standard or pillow back (with large comfy scatter cushions) can be ordered in leather or fabric/leather – there’s a huge range of options, with a colour or combination to suit every taste.
A Leather Sofa Is Hardwearing and Easy to Maintain
Leather is always a great choice for sofas – not only is it luxurious and tactile, it’s hardwearing and long-lasting, too. If anything, leather tends to look better with age (and not all of us can say that!). It’s so easy to maintain – ideal for busy households with children and pets, as spills and muddy paw prints don’t spell the end to your sofa. You can wipe it clean, buff it up to a soft sheen and if you ‘feed’ it with a recommended conditioning product from time to time, it will stay supple and won’t crack and crease as much.
Sometimes we need our living rooms to be quite multi-functional, in which case the rich Malbec may be a good choice for you. We can imagine families relaxing or friend socialising on this sumptuous leather corner design. There’s plenty of space and a corner sofa encourages conversation – great for gathering around the TV for a movie night too!
A Leather Sofa Comes in a Wide Choice of Styles
Leather sofas vary a lot in shape, size and design. This is great as it means there is a perfect style to suit your taste, budget and room dimensions. One of our absolute favourites from the Bay Leather Collection is the Belvedere. We adore its distinctive look – there’s a bit of a rock star edge and decadent glamour to this collection.
And because Retro never goes out of fashion, you’ll find a couple of armchairs in the Bay Leather Collection that will serve you well for the long term. With bags of charm and vintage appeal, the Barolo wing chair would be our recommendation for a room seeking to create a slight mid-century modern vibe.
While fans of the art deco era will love the swoon worthy button back and piped edges of the statement ‘Chesham’ Armchair.
A Leather Sofa Is Timeless
Re-decorating and furnishing your entire living room can take a lot of thought, time, effort and money. Although it can be exciting, it’s not something you want to do very often. So by choosing a leather sofa in a classic style you will be assured of its enduring appeal.
Colour-wise, keep to the more traditional autumnal leather shades for warmth, or lighter neutrals and greys for a calming feel. These shades and tones will out-live some of the more garish trend colours that dip in and out of fashion quickly.
Something like the Thornton from Harveys is ideal for capturing that timeless feel. It’s a contemporary take on a traditional Chesterfield with exquisite button and stud details.
With a classic shape and tasteful colour options, you could easily imagine this sofa in a chic Boutique hotel or grand country house. We especially love the wing back armchair from this collection – the perfect seat for enjoying a good fireside read.
By teaming your new sofa with iconic lighting, a classic colour palette and ever stylish pieces such as wooden tea chests, Moroccan rugs and velvet cushions, your room should never really age.

Leather is just so hardwearing isn’t it, Amanda? Generally gets better with age, too (wish I could say the same!)
