Rehoming a pet, whether that’s a dog, cat, rabbit or other furry friend, is one of the most rewarding experiences you can go through. Not only are you potentially saving them from a life spent in kennels or even worse, you’re giving them a second chance at life and the opportunity to have a loving family. Here are 5 reasons why you should consider adopting, not shopping.
The cost is a lot less than a designer pooch
If you’re longing for a four-legged best friend in your life but can’t afford one of the many designer dogs on the market, the cost of adopting instead of buying from a breeder is much less expensive. You’ll have your adoption fee to pay, but more often than not, the dog will already be neutered, microchipped and have had their initial vaccinations, saving you tonnes of money in the first few months!
No need for puppy training
Unless of course you’re rescuing a puppy; many dogs who are up for adoption are usually around 3+ years old. Whatever their previous owner has given them up for, you’ll often find that a rescue dog has had some form of basic training. Depending on where you adopt your new family member from, you may also get a level of advice and training through them too.
It has a ripple effect
There are over a staggering 600 million stray dogs in the world, and around 1 billion unwanted puppies that are born on the streets each year. Most die before they reach three years old and we have to do everything we can to help. By adopting, you’re potentially taking one of these beautiful creatures off the streets and preventing unwanted puppies being born.
It’ll teach children important life lessons
Most rescue dogs and puppies will have had a sad start to life. As heart-breaking as their past might be, it’s the perfect opportunity to teach your little ones some life lessons. By rescuing, you’ll help show your children the responsibility and importance of having respect for all animals. Plus, you’ll feel a whole lot less guilty when you spoil them with a snuggly dog bed from Orvis along with toys, the perfect collar and so much more.
They’re often healthier than those from a breeder
This might sound bizarre but hear me out. Even though they may have come off the street or from a pound, rescue centres always nurse dogs and other animals back to health before they’re allowed to be adopted. They’ll receive a full health check, including vaccinations and treatments for worms and fleas.
If you’re shopping around for a new furry friend to add to the family, consider adopting before you head to a breeder, you’d be surprised at what you’ll find!
