As we reach the cooler weather periods, it can be more important to make sure that our homes will keep us warm. While electric heaters can provide warmth, as can log fires, they can be more costly or tedious to run or maintain than a standard central heating system. Likewise, you will also require hot water for cleaning both your home and body.
This is where boiler servicing is crucial as, without a regulated, working boiler, you run the risk of not having these essentials within your home, as well as putting yourself and your family at a possible health risk.
Check the Boiler Works Correctly
During your boiler service, the engineer will check for any problems with the boiler itself. Some common problems may be able to be rectified then and there, but other ones may require the ordering of specific parts or even a new boiler to be installed. While you may not be aware of the methods of how to spot your boiler is broken, the engineer will be well trained in looking out for these signs, as well as having the means necessary to fix them. While this should be carried out on an annual basis, it would be completely understandable for you to ask for an engineer to come and check your boiler prior to winter, especially if it has not been used as much over the summer months.
Check for Carbon Monoxide
Carbon Monoxide is an odourless gas that can cause headaches, drowsiness and, eventually, death. It is found within most boilers, and usually works within them, with no harm to yourself, your pets, or your family. Should a leak in your boiler occur, this gas will be released and can have devastating effects on your health from carbon monoxide poisoning. This is why it is recommended that you use carbon monoxide alarms in your home so that, should a leak occur, an engineer can fix it. Even during servicing, an engineer may be able to see signs of potential leaks, or worn down areas of the boiler before the leak itself occurs.
Legal Requirement
For those who rent out a room, or their building, to tenants, boiler servicing on a minimum of an annual basis is a legal requirement depending on where you are in the world. You have a duty of care to your tenants, including ensuring that they can remain warm and safe. This is not the case when living in your own home where you are responsible for your own health and safety. A boiler servicing certificate must be obtained at the end of the servicing, so that you can prove that your building is still safe for tenant occupation.
Having the boiler serviced may seem like an inconvenience but, should no problems arise, it can take less than an hour. This can give you security in both the knowledge that your appliance is safe and working correctly, and that your home will remain warm and snug.
