When it comes to interior design, it’s smart to start with the living room. This is the space that you will use the most with your family, and yet redesigning your entire living room can feel like a mammoth task. It’s a big area of the home and you want to make sure that you are doing all that you can to make it comfortable and cosy. Your living room can be redesigned to suit your whole family, and one of the best ways to start is with your theme. This is a space that takes time to get right, and you can select some of the best pieces of furniture and choose the right paint to make sure that your living room stands out.
You have to consider the style, layout and flow of your living room. From the leather corner sofa you are eyeing up at the store to the bureau that you have in the corner with all of your things, you want a living room that will reflect your personality and stand out. Before you start looking at all the different designs and trends, you should think about the size of the room and the things you need vs the things that you want. Below, we’ve got tips to make sure you create exactly the living room you desire. Let’s take a look:
- Empty the room first. If you want to redesign your living room, you need an empty space to work with. You need to see every single angle and corner without anything in it. This way, you’ll see the radiators, windows, lighting fixtures and more as a blank canvas to decorate. You’ll then be able to draw a rough floor plan and you can ‘place’ your furniture on the picture and be able to envision it properly. You can’t create the ultimate living room without a blank canvas to work on.
- Did you know that your furniture doesn’t have to go against the walls? So many people choose to line their furniture against all of the walls of the rooms of their home, but you really don’t need to! The furniture doesn’t come with magnets attached, which means that you can give the room a little flair of modernity by moving everything a couple of inches away from the walls. The chances are that it’ll feel a little odd at first. However, it’ll work well if you just give it a chance!
- Think about the lighting. You can design your entire living space around both the natural light streaming through and the lamps and ceiling lights you have in the room. Light is a must for every bit of the space in your living room and so make sure that you are placing your furniture at the right angles to capture the right lighting. It’s going to help you to make the best use of the space when you know how the lighting will look when you’re on the sofa, or when you’re at the table.
- Choose the right sofa. Believe it or not, most people don’t believe that there is a central focal piece to a living room. There is: it’s the sofa. This should be a part of the space that draws the eye immediately. The most important piece of the living room is the sofa and if you have a large living room, you need a larger sofa to occupy the space properly and yet not overcrowd it at the same time.
- Try not to go with the norm. You don’t have to have the standard two sofas facing each other with a coffee table in the middle. If you want something a little quirkier, why not choose a different seating configuration? The angular options are great, and the fact you’ve chosen to get a leather corner sofa instead of two separate ones will make a big difference to the way your living room looks.
- Add tables. Coffee tables, nested tables, side tables – tables in the living room really matter. You can use a console table behind a sofa and place lamps on it. Your tables don’t have to match all the time and you can be a little different with yours.
- Remember the storage. Your living room storage matters for all of your possessions, so consider whether you have bookcases, baskets, ottomans and storage furniture that doubles up as a coffee table – you need it! Your living room storage is going to make the living room stand out more. Shelving, for example, is perfect as long as you keep it tidy and not covered in junk! Storage options make a big difference to your space, and you will find that your living room is less cluttered with the right storage, too.
- Make it multifunctional. Your living room should be a place to relax, to chill out, to entertain, to have fun. You can make your living space a multifunctional one that helps you to achieve everything that you are hoping to achieve for your space. If you want it to work as a relaxation area, you can with the right colours and furnishings.
- Think about the way it flows. The furniture, the colours – it all has to flow well. Mismatched furniture is nice but probably not for the place you entertain guests. Your living room should be something that flows when you look at it, and the colours should work together as should the materials and fabric that you use in the room. You can match colours with the curtains, rugs and cushions on the sofas, and you’ll see how well your new theme carries through the living room.
Take on these living room tips and watch your room stand right out! There are plenty of options out there to make your living room look fantastic.
