Although Coronavirus may have thwarted our travel plans for the time being, now is the ideal opportunity to start planning a wonderful trip of a lifetime once the pandemic is over.
You may be considering a long haul flight to a dream destination that takes you away from it all. One such place is Canada. Famed for its stunning, expansive landscape and outdoorsy lifestyle, the prospect of that all wide open space is certainly appealing. If travelling to Canada is on your wishlist, why not take some time over the coming weeks to do your research, plan and itinerary and get your travel documents in order, such as passport applications and to understand eTA Canada requirements. Here’s a few pointers to get you started on your adventure:
Where should I visit in Canada?
If you are thinking about the prospect of visiting Canada, perhaps the opportunity will become a reality towards the end of the year or into early 2021. So for winter travel, Ottawa near Montréal is a great place for art lovers and fine examples of Victorian architecture. The Yukon on the other hand offers the wilderness, mountains, moose, bears and escapism you may be seeking. Whistler is a well known and popular year-round destination, offering exceptional skiing, snowboarding, shopping, hiking, bars and restaurants aplenty.
Best destinations for a family trip?
Banff National Park and Niagara Falls are both stunning destinations to consider visiting if you are travelling with your family. Banff as a resort offers canoeing, hiking, skiing – it’s also a wildlife lover’s dream with elk, deer, bison, osprey to name a few. It has hot springs and a gondola ride up Sulphur mountain. Niagara Falls is one of those bucket list destinations and an exhilarating experience for all the family.
The eTA for Canada
British Citizens aren’t usually required to have a visa to visit Canada for short periods, but you’ll need to get an Electronic Travel Authorisation or eTA before you go. An ETA is a mandatory travel permit to travel to Canada without a visa. Applying for an eTA Canada takes about 5 minutes, and the costs are £19,95 per person. You can get your eTA form through e-visa.co.uk. For entry into Canada, Canadian law requires that all persons carry both proof of citizenship and proof of identity.
Other considerations
Once you’ve ensured your passport is in date (and has at least six months validity) and you’ve applied for your eTA, you can start looking at flight options, for when air travel becomes viable again. Make a list of accommodation ideas and pencil in possible dates for travel. Will you move around once you are there? If so, will a hire car be your preferred option, coach travel or taking internal flights?
In terms of time difference, the UK is 5 hours ahead of Ottawa, Ontario and the currency is the Canadian dollar. A flight from London to Toronto takes in the region of 7 hours 45 minutes.
Conclusion
A big trip like this needs careful planning to ensure you get the most out of your experience and the best possible deal. It’s imperative you have everything in order document-wise, from your eTA to your flight boarding passes, hotel reservations and everything in between. Take the time now to research your dream trip to Cananda; why not make a moodboard of the destinations you want to visit and what you plan to do there. Create a detailed itinerary.
