Did you know that September is National Home Improvement Month?
This initiative is all about inspiring homeowners and renters to make just one change to ensure they love where they live. Whether you are looking to renovate an individual room or the whole house, the campaign gives exclusive tips and offers to help you during your DIY projects this September.
I find autumn is a great time to get stuck into making the home winterproof, cosy and somewhere you want to spend lots of time in, so now is the perfect opportunity to get involved in the #MakeOneChange Challenge and even win prizes!
If you come up with an inspirational home improvement transformation, NHIM wants to hear about it. So whether you decide to update your electrics, tile your bathroom or kitchen or even just jet wash your patio to make it lovely, why not start now on your home improvement journey.
I was recently invited onto a podcast with Schneider Electric UK, one of the companies involved in supporting NHIM, which was fun and a new experience for me! Of course doing the electrics is one of the absolute fundamentals of home improvement and is so important to get right. We had a chat about home improvements during the Covid-19 pandemic, how people adapted to working from home and a bit about the future of home design. You can have a listen here.
One thing you might want to improve is the light fittings or switchplates and plug sockets in your home. I don’t think you can underestimate how much of an improvement doing these things can make to your environment. New electrical fixtures and fittings can really elevate your rooms, making them both smart and functional. Maybe you could install some plug sockets with a built-in USB – imagine not having to hunt down your phone charger or steal it back from the kids..! Just make sure to always consult a professional when it comes to electrical work in order to avoid any electric shocks or surprises in the walls. Schneider Electric has this handy, dedicated partner page where you can find a local electrician.
If you’re planning to decorate and would like to match your sockets and switches according to the room, make sure you’re following Schneider Electric UK on Instagram @schneiderelectric_home_uki
I’ve also created some mood board inspiration for you – I just love how these different fittings can complement interiors perfectly…
You can shop for all these sockets and switches at Amazon, Toolstation, CEF, Screwfix and all other major electrical distributors. Alternatively, consult your electrician for more information and find out more about Schneider Electric and NHIM here.
More Ideas For Home Improvement Month
- Try a new paint colour – this is possibly the easiest transformation to make the biggest impact without spending too much money. If you aren’t sure about choosing new colour palettes, take a look in your wardrobe – what colours do you like to wear? They’re a pretty good indication of the tones you’d like your surroundings to be.
- Switch up your soft furnishings – a new bedset/cushions/rug/curtains/vase of dried flowers can create a quick and simple change that brings you cheer.
- Upcycle something – that old bed chest of granny’s or the dated sideboard could be enhanced with new drawer knobs/paint/a wallpaper panel.
- Deep clean – cleaning the rugs with a professional carpet cleaner and seeing the dirt removed is so satisfying! Or steam mopping the floors, dusting the high to reach cobwebs, polishing up the front door furniture, cleaning the windows, jetwashing the driveway – all these jobs can really freshen up your surroundings and make you feel happier.
- Get inspired by your favourite home accounts on Instagram or head to Pinterest and don’t forget to check out Tidylife and other blogs in the home design sector. Take advantage of digital tools that make things easier; you can create mood boards in Canva or PicMonkey and Schneider also have a great new tool called Find Your Style to help you choose the perfect sockets and switches around your home.
What Does The Future Hold In Terms Of Design?
I think the future of home improvement is really exciting! We can look forward to more accessible and affordable smart technology and making our homes more sustainable and energy efficient with apps we can control from our phones. Schneider Electric UK is keenly interested in sustainability and installing net zero homes in the future.
I think we’ll also see more multi-functional homes and furniture design, as people continue to work from home, often in compact spaces. We’ll possibly see a growth in garden pod installation as dedicated work spaces to help separate work/life.
Dont forget, if you fancy listening to the podcast here’s the link as you could be in with the chance of winning an electrical hamper worth £500…so stay tuned for all the details!
