Many people believe that luxury interiors are out of their reach financially. The furnishings required are too expensive, right?
Well, not so fast. It turns out that luxe interiors are actually more about the overall aesthetic that you create than any individual component. If you look closely at many luxe interiors, you’ll see this. Very few feature gold leaf and enormous, expensive, crystal chandeliers. Instead, they use common materials in a stylish and effective way. And that’s how they create a sense of luxury.
In this post, we take a look at some of the tried-and-tested methods to create a more luxe interior. As you read through the following ideas, you’ll be surprised by just how easy it is to get that look that you want. It doesn’t require spending your life’s savings. It’s just about getting the design cues right and only spending money where necessary.
Camouflage Your TV
Electronics are more beautiful than they used to be. But for the most part, they are still lumps of black plastic. Not good.
If you take a look at most luxury interiors, you’ll notice that they either hide the TV or there is no TV at all. That’s because TVs interrupt the theme of a room and make it look a little strange.
There are a couple of ways around this. First, you can camouflage the TV. To do this, you can surround it with thick black-framed pictures on either side to make it look like it is a natural part of the room.
Another option is to simply place the TV inside a TV cabinet so that it is only visible when you are watching it.
A third option is to invest in a wallpaper TV. These sit flush on the wall and literally look like wallpaper when switched off.
Be warned, though: wallpaper TVs are notoriously expensive.
Add Sculptures
Sculptures are another feature of luxe interiors that you see all the time. Sculpture helps to bring a touch of class to any room, whether it is the living room, hallway or even a bedroom.
Sculptures, though, need not be expensive. Sure – you can buy the most expensive and beautiful designs. But you can also get imitation products that look just as good.
Try placing sculptures in areas dominated by straight lines. So, for instance, if you have a square coffee table, put a sculpture on top to add a little natural curviness. You can also place sculptures on pedestals in areas where you don’t have a lot of space.
Mix And Match Your Textures
You’ll also notice that many luxury interiors make a point of mixing and matching their textures. For instance, they’ll combine a delicate, fine-tog carpet with mosaic-style wall paper and glass-topped tables. These contrasts can radically change the appearance of the room.
Try mixing wood, textiles, glass and metals. Combining all four materials makes your spaces more dynamic and immediately gives them a sense of luxury. Try layering items, such as including metallic wall art on top of wallpaper, or finding furniture that combines wood with tempered glass.
Add Some Vintage Touches
Another staple of luxe interior design are vintage pieces. Including elements from times past is a great way to add history and a touch of elegance to a room. You’ll notice that luxe interior designers do not fill the entire room with vintage items. Instead, they are quite strategic, adding a piece here and there when they can.
If you’re planning on choosing vintage elements, try to go big. If you have the space, think grand pianos, but alternatively you could opt for a chaise longue, writing bureaus or even statement wallpaper walls instead of photo frames.
Change Your Window Treatments
Luxury interiors always pay substantial attention to window treatments. Many rooms feature impressive drapes that hang all the way down to the floor. Curtains are usually large and visually impressive, covering substantial spans of glass.
If you don’t have large windows in your living room, then blinds may be a better option. There are many designer products and close imitations that you could use to get the aesthetics that you want.
Use Custom Furniture
Using custom furniture is another trait of luxe interior design. It’s something that comes up again and again in high-end living. People create furniture that specifically fits their rooms to make them more elegant.
Naturally, commissioning a custom-designed piece will set you back a lot of money. But because there are now so many differently-shaped pieces on the market, you can achieve the custom effect by simply choosing sofas and tables that naturally fit the contours of your room. It’s actually quite easy. Just calculate the dimensions that you need and then find furniture that meets those specifications.
Invest In Statement Pieces
If you want to create a luxury interior, you will, at some point, need to invest in luxury items. These should be statement pieces that contribute major eye candy to your interior spaces.
If you’re stuck for ideas (or everything is out of your budget) choose designer light fittings. Often lighting is the best way to make an interior appear more luxe, welcoming and inviting.
Create Focal Points
You also need to be conscious of creating focal points in your rooms. These are elements that help to bring the entire interior together and prevent it from looking messy.
Take a look at your rooms as they are right now and ask yourself where they draw the eye. Usually, you’ll find that you are more prone to looking in the direction of the TV or the fireplace. But in luxe rooms, the focal point is usually something more extravagant, like a sculpture or a large piece of wall art.
Add Granite
Adding granite to your interiors is a great way to give them a rustic, yet luxurious appeal. Granite transformations can radically alter how specific rooms, like your kitchen, feel. What’s more, it’s an extremely durable material, so it will likely last for many years – perhaps more than a decade – before requiring replacement.
Tell Stories
Luxe interiors also attempt to tell stories. If you’ve ever been to a stately home, you’ll know this is true. Owners cover their walls in artwork that records their family history.
You can do something similar with vignettes on your walls. Simply arranging frames above a side table or dresser can add a sense of history to your rooms.
Add Plush Throw Pillows
Adding plush throw pillows to your rooms is a great way to create an atmosphere of high-end living. They create a sense of volume and help to dress your sofas (which can look a little bare without them). If you can, play with patterns and textures to see which combinations work best in the context of your room. Also, look for opportunities to add pillows beyond the couch to your chaise lounge, armchairs and other seating.
Be Mindful Of Your Colour Palette
When it comes to making rooms look more luxe, nothing is more important than the overall colour scheme. Certain tones evoke a sense of class that automatically registers whenever you walk into the room.
Make Everything Bigger
Making everything bigger is another common tactic you find in luxe interiors. Instead of opting for a regular-sized sofa, you could go for a full corner suite, for instance, or a large rug that spreads out over your hardwood floor.
You can also go for Roman ripples in your drapery – a great addition if your home has large windows.
Choose Your Accessories With Care
Accessories can sometimes make a room look cheap and tacky, even if you spend a lot of money on them. It’s critical, therefore, to choose them with care. Don’t just opt for items that you think look good on their own. Instead, consider how they will appear in context with the rest of your decor. If you get it wrong, the room won’t come together as you hope and you’ll wind up with something that falls short of the mark.
If you’re struggling, follow the lead of designers. Look at the way they use accessories in their interiors and simply copy them. This way, you can avoid clashes and conflicts.
Add More Textiles To Your Space
Luxury interior designers will often deploy textiles to give their rooms a more vintage look. Antique pillows and throws add a sense of character while complementing more neutral background decor. Turkish rugs are another great idea because of their beautiful and complex patterns.
When you add unusual fabrics to your rooms, you’ll notice that they help to improve the cozy factor. They also make your space appear more designed, helping things flow together.
So, in summary, you don’t necessarily have to spend a huge amount of money creating luxury interiors. The overall layout and arrangement of the room is more important than the cost of interior fittings and furnishings. With that said, it does help to have a bigger budget as you are more able to create elaborate visuals that might not be available via cheaper options.
