The weather is finally heating up and we can’t wait to go outside and enjoy the summer. Especially after all these months of staying inside and isolated from family and friends. Before you can really enjoy the summer, though, there’s one thing you must not forget: summer proof your garden!
How do you summer proof your garden? This can be different for everyone, based on what you desire and need to enjoy your garden to the fullest. Some people will want to find tulip bulbs for sale and enjoy new flowers in the spring and early summer, others only want a nice seating area to enjoy a book and the beautiful sun.
It’s easy to summer proof your garden with three simple steps!
Tidy up
Tidying up your garden is the first step to getting your outdoor space ready for all that summer entertainment. How can you fully enjoy your garden when there are leaves strewn everywhere, long grass and your outside furniture is dirty? Tidying up won’t take lots of time, but it will have an immediately great effect on your garden. As well as mowing, don’t forget to feed the lawn as well. It will improve the look of your garden immensely!
Don’t forget to inspect your outside furniture. After a long winter tables and chairs can be affected by the weather. Especially when they’re old. Make sure you fix any loose or broken parts before the nice weather starts or treat your garden to some new seating and a table so you can be sure to enjoy those summer days.
Plant new flowers
New colourful flowers will always give your garden a summery look. You can choose to buy flowering bedding plants and plant them when the summer starts, but you can also choose to plant bulbs yourself. Just keep in mind that most bulbs need at least 12 to 16 weeks before they can bloom. If you want to enjoy dutch tulip bulbs in the spring, you’ll need to plant them in the early autumn (just before the ground freezes). In some cases it’s possible to plant bulbs in the early spring. Just make sure it’s chilly enough and you may have a chance of enjoying new flowers in late spring, early summer.
Don’t forget to provide shade
On very warm summer days, standing or sitting in the sunlight can have an enormous effect on the human body. When exposed to too much sunlight, your body can become overheated or sunburned. Children especially are very vulnerable to strong sunlight. That’s why you can’t forget to provide shade in your summer proofed garden. Make sure it’s possible to cool off and get away from direct sunlight. Incorporate a garden parasol or awning to provide shade for your family. Stay hydrated too and don’t forget the sunscreen!
