There’s nothing like a little pre-Christmas rejig to make your home feel fresh ahead of the festive season, but you don’t have to spend a fortune to stay on-trend. Small changes and statement furniture items do all the hard work for you! But, if you’re still unsure, read on for some top tips.
Add a new table
It’s a small change but one that will have a big impact, especially if you swap a tired old rectangle table out for one of the trendier stylish round coffee tables that are popular right now. Not only will the different shape make people stop and wonder what’s new, but it will also make the dimensions of your living room feel entirely different as well.
Add seasonal textiles
It’s out with the light summer throws and in with the heavy knits and faux fur. Few of us want to be splurging on an expensive new sofa before Christmas, but a few new cushions and a chunky throw or two won’t break the bank. If you want to be festive-season ready, think about the colour scheme you’ll be decorating with and try to choose textiles that will complement.
Never enough candles
With a winter room makeover, you have to take a full sensory approach, which is why candles are a great and cheap addition. They can add colour, ambient light and gorgeous scents too, making them the perfect all-rounder. Something rich and spicy works well in autumn, maybe with a pumpkin undercurrent and nearer to Christmas, you’ll want to embrace the cinnamon-spiced varieties.
Turn down the light
Speaking of ambient lighting, if you want to capture a cosy feeling in your living room, lamps will be a good investment. Avoid the harsh glare of the main light and instead, choose a few table lamps with soft bulbs, for a snug vibe. Try to avoid the dazzling white bulbs as they will feel a touch sterile; warm white options will up the cosiness.
Have a rearrange
It sounds so simple, but sometimes, all you really need is to move the furniture you already have to make the living room work better. Try creating clear walkways between seats and face the sofas towards a fireplace, if you have one. The idea is to make the seating allow for easy conversation and the floor simple to navigate. If you don’t have that now, a reshuffle is in order.
Decorate the fireplace
If you have a non-working fireplace, don’t overlook its potential as a decorative centrepiece. In a cosy living room, these nooks are ideal for candle displays, flowers or even seasonal decorations. Ahead of Christmas, you could fill some glass hurricane lamps with gorgeous baubles to create a festive focal point.
Swap in heavier curtains
As the weather gets colder, draughts get worse, so a set of heavier curtains is an excellent addition to a living room. Even if you have triple glazing, a heavier drape adds more of a cosy feel and can be an easy way to bring in a new accent colour. Dark jewel tones always work so well in the latter part of the year, with navy blue and burgundy both being great for Christmas too.
It happens every year, but as Christmas approaches, so does living room decor fatigue. You’ve lived with it all year and suddenly everything feels a bit flat. Now’s the time to make some small but impactful changes so you can go into the new year happy with your home and looking forward to the spring revamp too.
