While you may be enjoying all that Fall has to offer – such as autumnal decorations for your home, crisp morning walks with the leaves falling around you and the return of the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice latte – it’s no secret that winter is coming. In fact, we’re just a stone’s throw away from snow-topped lawns and hanging baubles on the Christmas tree.
As a result, you must begin to get your home ready for winter. After all, you must be warm and cosy during this time, especially as the temperatures are set to drop.

With that in mind, here are some steps you can take now to ensure that your home is ready for winter.
- Install a fireplace. Installing a fireplace in your home is a great way to ensure you’re ready for the cold winter months. After all, whether you opt for a traditional wood fireplace or a modern gas fireplace, they’ll act as an additional heat source, while also creating a warm, relaxing atmosphere for you to enjoy. As installation can be tricky, it’s best to reach out to a Fireplace service provider who can set up your fireplace on your behalf.
- Add some extra insulation in your loft. According to a recent study, “nearly 40% of the heat in your home is lost through the attic.” As a result, you should be looking into ways to improve roof and attic insulation. For example, you could add insulating foam to the rafters or ceiling joints. This could also help you to lower your energy bills as you’re allowing less heat to escape your home. This can come in handy as Uk energy bills are seemingly rising each month with no end in sight.
- Go crazy with throws and blankets. Adding extra blankets and pillows to your bed is an excellent way to stay warm at night in a cold bedroom. However, they can also be used in other areas of your home to the same effect – such as in your living room or dining room. Throws, blankets and pillows also work to make these spaces look cosier and more inviting.
- Lay down an area rug. Carpet is widely considered to be the warmest type of flooring in winter (and beyond). However, many homeowners prefer wooden flooring as it offers a more modern finish, as well as being easier to clean and maintain. You can have the best of both worlds, however, by laying down an area rug during the winter months!
- Clean out your gutters. During the autumn months, our gutters can easily get blocked by leaves and other falling debris. While this may not seem a major issue, this can create a blockage which can reduce your access to heating and hot water, and could also cause your pipes to freeze over during the winter. As a result, now is the perfect time to learn the right way to clean your gutters. While this may be a time-consuming task, you’ll thank yourself for doing it each time you switch on the heating or step into a delightfully warm bath.
