Our pets are a member of the family, so you’re bound to want your pooch to be as comfortable as everyone else. To give them the true VIP treatment, your dog should have their own space where they can relax and play in peace. Allocating a separate area is also conducive to good behaviour, as it creates a safe place for them to go in times of stress.
With so many benefits to putting together a DIY space for your dog, there are a few things you’ll need to take into consideration before getting started.
Where should it be?
If you have a spare room in your home that is underutilised, this is the perfect opportunity to put it to good use.
Alternatively, a laundry room is often a convenient spot, as there usually isn’t too much foot traffic through this area. As there may be a sink nearby, this will also mean it’s easier to keep your dog’s space clean.
Alternatively, you could separate out a designated corner of a larger area, like a living room or kitchen. As long as this space is large enough for your pup to take themselves away, this should work just fine.
If you wanted to create something truly luxurious, consider converting an understairs cupboard into a built-in dog pen for their own hideaway.
The perfect bed
As your dog will usually sleep for around 12 hours a day, getting them the perfect bed is essential. Dog beds come in so many varieties these days, so you should have a lot of options to get the ideal fit for your décor and your pet’s needs.
Small dogs often have a lot of choice – they fit anywhere, after all! However, larger breeds have more specific requirements. Likewise, the bed will take up much more space, so it will need to be stylish to match your interiors. Select a bed for large dogs that is luxurious for your pet to provide ultimate comfort while seamlessly blending in with your room’s design.
Toy corner
Your furry friend may snooze for half the day, but they’ll demand play for the other half! Dogs need plenty of mental stimulation to keep them well behaved and happy. If they get bored, it can lead to destructive habits.
Although you’ll probably spend some time playing with your pet to strengthen your bond, setting up a toy corner means they can play independently. It also means you’ll have fewer dog toys strewn all over your home!
Dog proofing
It’s imperative that the space is safe for curious canine minds.
Hide wires under furniture, with tape or by encasing them in wire covers. The room should be free of hazardous chemicals or products that would be harmful to ingest. Likewise, if your pup is a chewer, you’ll want to make sure any objects are out of reach. Where possible, select an area with laminate flooring to make any accidents easier to clear up.
Consider installing indoor cameras to keep an eye on them from a distance – you may just capture some funny moments too!
