Birds are wonderfully colourful and musical creatures, and it’s very rewarding to spot a flock of feathered friends enjoying the food that you put out for them.
If you’re a beginner and you’re wondering how to encourage a wider range of birds to visit your garden, here are some handy tips to help you attract a selection of different species.
Robins
The robin is one of the UK’s favourite garden birds thanks to its distinctive red breast and friendly nature.
The quickest way to a robin’s heart is food, particularly during the winter months. Robins will happily eat insects and invertebrates all year round, but when the colder months start to creep in, they’re on the lookout for seeds and fruit too.
While you can’t help them hunt for prey, you can make your garden a cosy home for the robin’s natural prey. There are lots of easy ways to do this: you could allow sections of your lawn to grow wild, plant wildflowers, or simply add a compost heap to encourage insects and invertebrates to move in.
Over the winter, you could also put out bird feeders filled with tasty bird seed mixes that include ingredients like sunflower hearts and peanuts.
Blue tits
Blue tits are incredibly vibrant birds, with colourful blue-and-yellow feathers and a distinctive trilling chirp.
To make your outdoor space more inviting to blue tits, we recommend planting berry-rich trees and bushes, as berries are a big part of their diet, especially during autumn.
They’re also big fans of fat balls and suet pellets, as well as peanuts. Blue tits prefer to eat while perched, so hanging feeders are probably your best bet.
Goldfinches
These incredibly attractive birds boast very colourful and uniquely-patterned feathers. If you’d like to encourage them to hang out in your garden, a great way to get goldfinches on side is by planting their favourite foods: thistle and teasel.
When these natural food sources are scarce, however, putting out bird seeds such as niger seed and sunflower hearts will certainly get the goldfinch’s attention.
Blackbirds
Blackbirds are very common wild birds, and you’ve probably noticed lots of them visiting your garden all year round. Their mellow song is a favourite among UK residents.
If you’d like to help keep blackbirds fed, here’s what they like to eat:
Sunflower hearts
Raisins
Mealworms
Suet pellets
Chaffinches
Like many wild birds, chaffinches tend to feed on invertebrates such as spiders and earwigs. However, outside of breeding season, the best food for them is seeds.
We recommend using ground feeders to put out tasty seed mixes. Chaffinches will particularly enjoy mixes that include ingredients such as sunflower hearts and peanuts.
