Recently, Harveys Furniture asked me to help them inspire people to live their homes to the fullest. Together with Alina from The Fairytale Pretty Picture they asked us to champion two different interior styles. Alina’s post is all about how to achieve a bright and lively interior style, whereas I am talking about how to create a calm and tranquil one.
Personally, I think there is a place for both room styles, but the choice often comes down to which room you are decorating.
Having recently re-painted my bedroom in a calm and tranquil colour, I feel it was definitely the right choice. I mean, can you imagine trying to fall asleep in a room full of vibrant colours and bold patterns?
For me, the key to a calm and tranquil environment is the colour palette you use but also the accessories. A restful wall colour and natural cotton and linen fabrics in neutral colours will help create the look. Also, adding organic materials to your decor – wood, rattan, fur, plants.
Previously we had a dark greeny/blue wall colour which I replaced with a lovely soft and dusky pink. The paint is called Wild Mushroom 4 (in vinyl matt) by Dulux and as soon as I tried a tester pot, I knew it was the right shade as I could immediately see how it complemented our grey headboard, providing a subtle contrast.
I dressed the bed with simple white bedding and added some grey/neutral cushions. A faux fur throw lends that more ‘natural’ feel as well as the wicker basket and plant at the side of the bed.
It’s a work in progress, so I’d like to add some more rattan or wicker pieces, such as a light shade. I need some lamps too for the side of the bed and plan to use exposed vintage style bulbs suspended from fabric cords for simplicity.
Do you like the wall art? They are free printables that I found on Pinterest. The fab faux banana leaf was £2.49 from Dunelm – what a steal!
When I walk into our bedroom, it really does feel calming. I want to snuggle up in the bed and fall asleep! Why not head over to the Harveys Furniture blog to read more on this topic and discover lots more home inspiration, too – they’d also love you to tell them which style you prefer!

Looks lovely Antonia, calm and snuggly with that cosy throw. I like the idea of exposed vintage-style bulbs on fabric cords in there too. And another thumbs up for the banana leaf – good old Dunelm 🙂
