Are you getting ready to buy your very first home? Consider buying a fixer upper rather than a house that’s only in the planning stages, and you’ll be giving yourself the challenge of the century! There is nothing wrong with buying a house that’s already established, or buying a house that is ultra modern and full of fixtures and fittings.
You can choose from a range of new builds that haven’t even been beyond the planning stage, but the best thing that you can do is choose a house that works for you and your family. If you are looking at buying a second house, then a fixer upper is an excellent choice. You can work on it slowly, and you’ll be able to make it look exactly as you want it to look! Buying and fixing up a house takes time and planning, and it’s worth every single moment you spend on it. So, why should you try a fixer upper? Let’s take a look.
- Saving money. You will spend a decent amount of cash on your house fixing it up to look great, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t get it back. When you choose to fix a fixer upper up, you’re likely to earn more on your house later. When you sell it, it’ll be worth more. When you rent it, it’ll be valued higher because of the improvements you’ve made. You can save your money over time and you can spread the cost of the house, too, which will mean you can do it up over as long a time as it takes you to do it.
- You learn some great new skills. If you’re fixing up your home yourself, you’re going to learn some decent trade skills along the way. Being hands on is a great way to pick up tips and tricks as you fix your house room by room. From basics like learning which screwdriver works for each task, to gaining new skills which will come in hand for every area of the house now and in the future. Your fixer upper is going to teach you a lot!
- You have something amazing for retirement. When you invest your time and effort into a new project, such as a forever home, you are going to be building something for the long term and even for your retirement. You might be young and busy with the house now but eventually you’ll want to retire someplace pretty. If you’ve spent a good portion of your life fixing up a house, you want to know that you can live well in it later.
- It’s a good way to burn off frustration. Getting your hands dirty with a project is one of the best ways that you can burn off energy or frustration. Fixing up a house takes a lot of physical work, and you’ll blow off so much steam that you can’t do in therapy! You will exert yourself in ways that you couldn’t imagine when you’re building and taking on a house. But there’s pride to be had in that tiredness and sense of achievement.
- It’s impressive. How many people do you know that built or renovated a house from scratch? How many people do you know took the time to build room by room so that their house came together off their own backs? It’s impressive and shows courage and determination which are really good character traits to have!
