I may be more of a town girl than a country girl, but that didn’t stop me getting excited about partnering with the distinctly British fashion and footwear company, Welligogs, recently. This sought after heritage brand is aimed at discerning buyers seeking contemporary, high quality clothes and shoes with a smart outdoorsy style and slightly equestrian flavour. Think waxed weatherproof hats and jackets, tailored wool coats or tweed jackets and exquisite leather riding boots.
If you’ve got a weekend away at a country hotel coming up, or you’re heading off for a long walk with the dog or a nice, cosy pub lunch, this is a range of clothing and footwear you ought to check out. But I think the versatility of this brand shows that even a townie like me can enjoy a slice of country-style living! I chose a very classic white shirt and leather boots to try out.
For the photographs, I headed to a place with its own enduring heritage and classic looks, the old Refuge Insurance building in Manchester. These days it is home to the Principal Manchester Hotel and one of my favourite hang outs, The Refuge. Below is the particularly stunning Winter Garden which features a glass atrium roof and fantastic black Crittall style windows and doors, styled with lush green velvet sofas, a monochrome tiled floor and twinkly trees.
Having honed my own personal style over the years, I’ve come to realise that my favourite looks tend to involve jeans, a t-shirt and blazer, or jeans with a shirt or wool jumper, leather boots and a smart coat. I like a simple colour palette, too – white, grey, navy, red. My ultimate aim is to create a capsule wardrobe that features design classics that I can switch around and enjoy wearing on repeat.
Like many of us, I’m feeling a bit sad about all the throwaway fashion fads that come and go (to landfill, often). I get bored of cheap items as quickly as they shrink in the wash or fall apart at the seams. Surely it’s better to invest in pieces that we never tire of wearing – for example, a cashmere jumper, tailored coat and Chelsea boot – to which new accessories can be added now and again to keep things fresh; a scarf, bag or new pair of earrings.
Certainly, a crisp looking white shirt with jeans and a good pair of boots is a look I like and an outfit I will always feel comfortable and relaxed in.
So for me the Phoebe Burgundy Check Shirt is an ideal, key piece for my wardrobe. The subtle heritage check at the cuff and down the front is a nice detail that elevates it from an ordinary white shirt, but doesn’t shout at you.
I also love the fact that it has the appearance of a crisp cotton shirt, but is 100% stretch cotton, which feels a little softer and has more give. (Also easier to iron!)
The Welligogs Arya black leather boots (also available in Burgundy) I would happily wear all the time. You can’t beat a smart ankle boot and the quality leather means these ones felt totally comfortable from the first wear – which is not always the case with footwear. The adjustable buckles and checkerboard fabric details are what make these boots really stand out for me. With a wearable 5″ heel height (I say that as an infrequent wearer of high heels) I think they are an incredibly versatile style that would compliment any outfit.
They are quite expensive at £249 – but I think with footwear you get what you pay for and cost per wear on these would make them a good investment, in my opinion!
If you’re planning to create a smart capsule wardrobe, or if you are just a bit indecisive in the mornings about what to wear, it’s a good rule of thumb to keep it classic and simple! With a few staple pieces from Welligogs in your wardrobe – and maybe one of their tweed jackets or wool coats with a statement boot – you can’t really go wrong. I’m thrilled with my first try of Welligogs and will be watching out for their new arrivals. If you fancy having a look at their website, you can find it at www.welligogs.com
