The beginning of a new year often brings a variety of interior design trends. However, vintage-style interiors seem to be a trend which we see come back each year as it can easily be incorporated into your home. Vintage interiors can be taken from any era and can usually be as far away from the old-fashioned style you may be picturing. This type of style can be incredibly versatile and can add something unique to your home.
The best vintage interiors tend not to be overworked and can often be easily achieved by adding certain pieces to bring a room to life. If you think this interior design style will look good in your home or just even a room, we have put together this guide on how you can achieve this seemingly timeless look.
Floors
The flooring in your home is often what makes your home flow from room to room and is an incredibly important aspect which can often be overlooked. Vintage flooring can come in all shapes, sizes and styles, so you will need to think about what works best in each room. Many vintage interiors don’t tend to use carpet and often stick to harder floors such as tiles and wood, but again you will need to consider what works best in each room. If you are lucky enough to live in an older home, you may be able to strip the flooring back to find some stunning wood or even tiles. If not, you will be able to find an array of vintage-inspired flooring in a variety of shops.
Walls
The walls are one of the most important aspects of a room and really set the tone of the space. From wallpaper and paneling to mirrors and artwork, this is often where you can let your personality shine.
Dark colours and shades are definitely in for 2019, and this really reflects and incorporates the vintage style well. However, not all homes can incorporate this, due to dark coloured walls making rooms look smaller. Bold wallpaper can work well to bring a splash of colour to a vintage style room. If your home is on the smaller side, then you can also choose a feature wall within a room to show off instead.
Lighting
Lighting is surprisingly overlooked when it comes to any type of home renovation, but having the right lighting completes a room. Vintage style lights can be incorporated into any room and can give it a finished look. Industrial style lighting with vintage light bulbs will be a welcomed addition to any space and can completely change the ambience. From bathrooms to bedrooms, industrial style lighting can create a vintage feel when matched with darker shades and bold-coloured soft furnishings.
Soft Furnishings and Accessories
Soft furnishings such as cushions, sofas and curtains are what gives a room a personality. Of course, you can fill each room with antique pieces and trinkets, but if you wish to have a subtler approach to achieving a vintage interior, then combining this theme with your soft furnishings is a great way to do so.
From patterned cushions, vintage-inspired rugs to rustic looking furniture there are many easy ways you can make a room have that vintage feel. Although antique pieces will be a more costly way of accessorising your home, this type of furnishing can complete a room and bring your vision to life.
Colours and Patterns
For those looking to brighten up a room with a vintage twist, then shades of white are always a winner. If you are lucky enough to live in a larger abode, then dark colours are trendy such as teal or navy. Transforming your walls with dark tones may sound a little frightening, so if you like the sound of the idea but don’t want to commit, incorporating darker furnishings such as chairs or a sofa can achieve this look too. Using patterns on the walls, floor and on the soft furnishings such as curtains can often add some character to a room especially when opting for vintage-inspired pieces.
These are just a handful of ways you can achieve a vintage-style interior. However, how much you choose to incorporate this into your home is completely up to you. Vintage-style interiors often work well with just a hint of some of the points mentioned above or work equally as well when a room has completely embraced it.
