The kitchen is a much-used room in your home. Even if you’re not a top chef and you prefer not to do much cooking, you’ll still use the kitchen to prepare drinks and store food, and it’s the ideal hangout during parties and when you want to chill by yourself.
A messy, untidy kitchen is not such a great space, though. In fact, a cluttered kitchen can make you feel down and negative (even if you don’t realise it), and it can even feel like an embarrassment if you have guests over. Once you understand how to organise your kitchen a little better, however, you can be proud of it and enjoy the enhanced feelings of happiness and positivity it will bring. Read on to find out how to make your kitchen a more organised, comfortable space – you won’t regret it.
Clean Up
Before you can start organising, it’s a good idea to have a thorough clean-up of the kitchen. From surfaces to cupboard doors to the inside of the fridge, scrub away until everything is gleaming. To make things easier, you can look online for things like top cleaning tips for kitchen tiles and follow the advice of experts.
Once it’s done, you’ll immediately feel better about the space you have, and organising will become an easier, perhaps even enjoyable, task.
Edit Your Crockery
Once the cleaning has been completed, you will be in a much better place emotionally and mentally to start the rest of the organising. The first thing to do is to edit your crockery. In other words, if you have any old mugs that take up space and are never used, or chipped plates, or mismatched (unintentionally) items you don’t need, it’s time to remove them from your kitchen. This way, you will have much more space, and you’ll be able to use the items that work better for you.
Rather than throw your old crockery out, you can donate it (assuming it’s in good condition) to a charity or a refuge. Just because you no longer have a use for it doesn’t mean someone can’t still use it.
Thin Out Your Gadgets
Buying kitchen gadgets is something a lot of people find highly enjoyable. The problem is that it’s just not possible to use them all, and often they, much like your old crockery, just take up space. This is especially true if they sit out on the kitchen surface. When your counter is covered in equipment that is only used from time to time, it’s always going to feel crowded and messy no matter how much you clean up around it.
If you don’t use the gadget at all, sell it on and free up the space. If you do use it but not every day, then it should be stored away. If there’s no room in your kitchen, what about investing in some plastic boxes and stacking everything neatly under the stairs or in a shed?
Don’t Stockpile
It’s so easy to keep buying the same things every week even when you don’t need them. Instead of stockpiling lots of bags of pasta, rice, condiments, and other items, spend a little extra time making a list of creating your online supermarket order. Do it standing in front of the cupboards so you know what you need and what you don’t – don’t assume that you’ll always need the same stuff from week to week.
You could even install a blackboard in the kitchen for people to write down the things that you’re running low on. Then you’ll know exactly what is urgent and what can wait for another week to restock.
By doing this, you won’t overspend and you’ll have more cupboard space too.
