Decluttering your house is one of those tasks most people put off until it can’t wait anymore. The chances are midway through; you are regretting all of your life choices and wondering why you even started in the first place. However, committing to following through is something you need to be on board with once you have started it.
Did you know that with a well-planned approach, your decluttering journey can be satisfying rather than daunting? Adopting effective strategies, such as the ‘Four-Box Method’ where you categorize items into ‘Keep ‘, ‘Donate ‘, ‘Sell ‘, and ‘Trash’ boxes, or the ‘KonMari Method’ where you declutter by category, can transform your home into a space that truly reflects your lifestyle. Just like any other home improvement project, the key lies in the preparation.
Make A Master List
First, it’s a good idea to make a master list of all the rooms in your home. Then the simple act of listing all the areas that need decluttering, from under-sink storage units to sock drawers, the laundry cupboards, under your bed, anywhere and everywhere, can give you a sense of control and organization. Be specific about each area and write each one as a separate point. For example, don’t just write under the kids’ beds; write each bed as a separate task. Break it down as much as possible.
From here, you can highlight the most urgent areas and what you want to accomplish first, so you have a place to start.
Give Yourself A Timeline
Decluttering can be extremely overwhelming, especially if you’re tackling it all at once with no plan in your head. You need to identify the gaps in your time, and then you can assign appropriate tasks to those gaps. So, if it’s just 20 minutes, then decluttering one kitchen drawer might be all you can do. But if it’s a weekend while the kids are away, then you can get stuck into the bigger jobs, such as sorting through the attic or the garage, with no disruptions.
Get Your Supplies Ready
The more prepared you are, the better things will go. You might need to get vacuum storage bags, which are airtight bags that you can use to swap over seasonal clothes or put your blankets into storage for the summer. Or you might need to sort through the kid’s room, meaning you need boxes to put in toys you will be donating so you can easily take them to a charity to use. For more significant tasks, you might find booking a skip is helpful if you have a lot of clutter or old furniture at home or you need to rid your home of the remnants of upgrades and old flooring from completed work in the house. Look at how you will need to help rid your home of everything you don’t want, be it a skip, an extra roll of bin bags, or even labels, and have them ready to go when you’re ready to start.
Remove Immediately
Ideally, you will remove anything you no longer want immediately, or it will just end up languishing in another part of the home until you can get rid of it. Whether you take donations to a local charity or charity shop, take a trip to your local household waste centre to dispose of items no longer fit for the purpose you choose to try and sell via online sites such as Vinted, eBay, or the forever wild Facebook marketplace, ensure that items can be redistributed as required sooner rather than later. This immediate action can bring a sense of relief and peace of mind, knowing that your home is becoming clutter-free.
