Lisbon
Lisbon is Portugal’s capital city and proves to be a hugely popular city break amongst the majority of tourists. This major city is a little different to others you might have been to before. It’s beautifully coloured houses really stand out from the crowd, while it’s also one of the few places in the world to still use a traditional tram system. Beautiful yellow trams trundle down the street and can take you around the city on a sightseeing circuit for a truly reasonable price. Just be aware that they can get busy at peak times and, as in any city, keep an eye out for pickpockets. Pick up a traditional pastel de nata and prepare yourself for a day of sightseeing, with many cultural attractions ranging from Jeronimo’s Monastery to Torre de Bellam, Sao Jorge Castle and a range of museums and galleries.
London
London is the capital of the UK and offers so much to any tourist. While the weather may not be as good as some other European destinations throughout the year, the city makes up for the greyness and rain with character and is jam packed with fun and memorable things to do. Ride an open top bus for key sights, visit Buckingham Palace, see Big Ben, ride the London Eye, pass by St Paul’s Cathedral and enjoy some of the best museums and art in the world. The National Gallery, the V&A, the Natural History Museum, the British Museum and so many more will tick all of your boxes. When choosing somewhere to stay, consider budget and proximity to public transport options. Aldgate is a great location for a hotel on a budget, while Kensington can prove memorable if you have more to send, for example.
Athens
Ever visited Greece before? Why not head to Athens? Athens is low cost in comparison to many European cities, but it has a lot to offer and brilliant weather during the summer. Learn about ancient Greek history by visiting the Parthenon, the Acropolis, the Acropolis museum, the National Archeological Museum and more. You can also enjoy catamaran or boat cruises around nearby Greek islands, or day tours further into mainland Greece. Enjoy traditional Greek cuisine and make sure to pack some good shoes. As with any city break, there’s bound to be plenty of walking.
Travel Restrictions
Of course, before heading anywhere nowadays, you do need to check travel restrictions of countries you’re considering visiting. These vary drastically, with some countries having completely open borders and others requiring proof of vaccination or PCR tests. Having the right information and documentation before you go can make a huge difference to your trip, so be prepared and do your research beforehand. Also keep an eye on updates, as restrictions can change at any point.
Hopefully, some of the information outlined above should help you to choose a great city break for the year ahead. Be organised, get booked and enjoy yourself! We’ve all been cooped up for too long.
