It’s one thing surviving a home renovation or even moving house. The real work comes once you settle in and realize you’re in this home for the long haul. This is what you’ve always wanted, of course. You’ve wanted a place to call your own; a place that is comfortable, cosy, warm, and safe, so what’s the problem?
You’ll soon discover that owning a home comes with a lot of maintenance. Your days of calling the landlord are over, and you’ll need to fix any problems that you encounter. Many homeowners understand this and know that this is what they signed up for, but there might be some home maintenance jobs you forget. If you want to ensure your home is perfect from top to bottom, make sure you don’t forget these essential jobs.
Gunky Gutters
Everything from leaves to twigs, and even critters setting up a home can cause your guttering to become clogged. This means that water won’t be able to flush down your drains, causing a clog and even damaging the guttering altogether.
You don’t often think about your gutters, so it’s useful to clear them out at least twice a year, and even more if you live in wet and windy climates. It’s far from the prettiest job in the world, but it will keep your gutters and home drainage system in excellent condition, preventing exterior damage that will be expensive to repair.
Protecting Your Pride and Joy
If you’re someone who loves a little luxury and basking in the sun or have put plenty of hard work and endless hours into making your home the place to be, you should do everything you can to keep it in excellent condition.
Outdoor pools are fantastic for cooling off during the summer, but the colder months tell a different story. If you want to minimize damage and ensure you can use it as soon as the temperatures tick up next year, winterizing your fiberglass pool is a must. You could try this yourself, but it’s always better to trust a professional for the best results, so you can take a dip next year with confidence.
Fantastic Fencing
Your fences are more than just a way to determine boundaries around your home. You might not think much of them, but they can take a battering throughout the years. Rain, snow, sleet, and sun can all affect your fence’s condition, but there are always things like animal interference and your kids kicking a ball against it that might cause damage.
The fencing can set the tone for the rest of your home, so repairing and damage, replacing rotting panels, and giving it a fresh coat of paint or varnish will all make it look better. If you’re unsure why your yard doesn’t quite look its best yet, it could be your fence.
Clearing the Clutter
You may already have a clutter protocol around your home, but it might not be enough. Everyone knows that the bigger the home, the less on top of your clutter you are. You can always find space for this or that, and although it doesn’t seem like a significant issue right now, it might cause problems later on.
The annual spring cleaning is a fantastic way to stay on top of the clutter, but even this might not be enough. If you’ve got kids, or just have a hard time saying goodbye to things you’ll never use again, you need to be more ruthless and clear your clutter more regularly throughout the year.
Dreaded Draft
Everyone has been there before. You sit down with a mug of tea or hot chocolate and are ready to get cozy for the evening watching trashy TV that no one can judge you for. However, just as you’re getting comfortable, you feel a chill, and then another, and then another.
No one wants to live in a drafty home, so before you can relax on the sofa, you’ll need to fix it. Go around your house and look for possible culprits. This could be around the window, which will require caulking. It might also be your doors, and a draft excluder can be effective. If the problem persists, the problem could lie in your roof, so get a professional to check that out.
Gross Grease
Most people enjoy spending time in the kitchen and cooking up something delicious for their family. Once everyone is sufficiently stuffed, you’ll do the dishes (or throw them in the dishwasher) and wipe the counters down. However, this isn’t always enough.
The more you cook, the more grease will accumulate in places you don’t often see. It could be on top of the extraction fan vent or even behind any jars you have near the stove. While it’s an easy fix, touching graze is never pleasant, so don’t neglect a quick wipe down or soak the fan filters in soapy water to clear them out and make the extraction more efficient.
Eye in the Sky
Even if you live in a safe, comfortable neighborhood, you should still consider the benefits of home security. However, if you’ve never had cameras or even security lights around your home, you may not think about it, or even want to go through the hassle of installing it.
While the chances of you being a victim of theft are slim when you consider how many other opportunities there are, it’s still a good idea to protect yourself just in case. Setting up video cameras and security lights around the outside of the house, especially darker areas like your side gate or the backyard, can give you the protection you need in the event of attempted theft, letting you sleep soundly at night.
Overhang Hangover
Looking after your yard, no matter how big or small is something everyone needs to do when maintaining their home. But, if you’re not too experienced with gardening, there are some things you might miss.
Dead trees could be a danger, as there’s a risk of them falling over and damaging your home or even your neighbors home. Likewise, any overhanging branches could put your roofing at risk when debris falls. It might not seem like it can affect things too much at first, but the longer you leave it, the bigger the risk of irreparable (or at least expensive) damage.
Scrubbing Up Well
Some people clean the bathroom every week, others every month. Whichever you prefer, there might be some things you notice along the way. While you will wipe your faucets and bathtub until they are sparkling and wiping away any signs of mold, there are other things you’ll need to focus on.
One of the most significant fixes is the caulking around your bath or shower. Over time, this can disintegrate and wear down, which could cause leaks that can damage the floorboards and cause mold or rot. You can repair this yourself, so keep an eye on any peeling and act quickly.
Seasonal Surprises
Bringing the holiday cheer is popular wherever you are, but it’s not always easy to bring this cheer to your home and your neighborhood. You don’t want to find your plans for illuminating the street ruined by discovering broken lights and decorations.
It might feel silly to get everything out in July, but this will save you the trouble of rushing to the store on Christmas Eve. You can make it easier to set everything up by installing hooks and other supports during the summer when the days are longer and warmer, saving you plenty of time when the holiday season comes around.
Regular Routine
Keeping to a consistent routine is perhaps the best way to make it easier for yourself to maintain your home. However, people might only consider washing the dishes, vacuuming, and dusting as the only important parts.
There are plenty of little problems that you’ll encounter around the house, so staying on top of these will save you a lot of time later. Making quick fixes as soon as they come to your attention will avoid more substantial repairs and perhaps save you some money along the way.
Suitable For Sale
The final thing you mustn’t forget when maintaining your home is to prepare it for sale. This is true even if you’ve only just moved in, as you’ll want to ensure it is perfect if you ever feel like moving out.
This might be doing renovations or making repairs after the previous owners left it looking less than desirable. You will want to make your home look as good as possible for new owners, so improving the garden and boosting curb appeal, or improving the interior can all contribute to increasing the home’s value. You will need to make it a place that other people can see themselves living in, too, so tidying up (and keeping it tidy) will be high on the agenda.
Remember Remember
You don’t need to spend all of your time fretting about the next big cleaning or maintenance job in or around your home. As long as you stay on top of your jobs around the house, you’ll find it much easier to manage your home and keep everything running smoothly.
